The chart shows the latest forecast for the cost, in percent of GDP, of the federal government’s Medicare program for seniors through 2095. It shows the cost of each of the three major parts of Medicare: the Part A Hospital Insurance program, the Part B Supplementary Medical Insurance program and the Part D Supplementary Medical Insurance drug benefit. See the Center for Medicare and Medicaid’s website for more details.
The numbers are obtained from the current 2025 Medicare Trustees Report using numbers from a spreadsheet “HI and SMI Incurred Expenditures as a Percentage of the Gross Domestic Product” available in Expanded and Suppplementary Tables.

Federal Budget for FY27 Released
On April 4, 2026, we updated usgovernmentspending.com with the numbers from the Public Budget Database in the Budget of the United States Government for Fiscal Year 2027.
Here is how headline budget estimates for the upcoming FY 2027 fiscal year have changed since the release of the FY 2025 budget in Winter 2024. There were no budgetary estimates in the budget documents for the FY 2026 budget.
